:Om Shri Ganeshaye Namah Om:

An Overview of  Vaastu through Astrology

Dr Anita Arora & Er Mohan Pahujani

According to religious scriptures, Lord Brahma made our body comprising of five elements i.e. earth, space, water, fire and air. Earth gives shape, figure and smell to our body. Spaces provide sounds in the body. Fire gives thirst and hunger. Water supports fluids and blood in the body. Air gives feeling of touch in the body. There is a need  to do a balance of all the above elements to remain happy, healthy and lead a peaceful life. There is a very famous concept in many scriptures that there has to be a relationship between microcosm elements of the individual and the macrocosm elements, which comprise the outer world.

All these elements have an association with planets e.g. Sun & Mars – Fire; Moon & Venus – Water; Mercury – Earth; Jupiter – Akash; Saturn & Rahu – Air. This in a way proves that there is a correlation between Vaastu and Astrology but there is a need to understand it in correct perspective and apply it scientifically.

The word Vaastu itself can be dissected into ‘Vaas plus Tu’. ‘Vaas’ means to reside and ‘Tu’ is indicative of  nakshatra  Purva Phalguni, whose lord is Venus and this planet is significator of homes / interior decoration / Architecture etc. Venus is the lord of Taurus, an earthy element rashi as well as an airy element, the Libra. Further, the word ‘Tu’ correlates with rashi Capricorn which is an earthy sign signifying mother earth. As per classical references there is a correlation of word ‘Ta’ with ‘Vaayu’ the wind, ‘U’ is connected with earth, ‘Va’ and ‘Sa’ word is connected with water. So here we see that the composition of the word ‘vaastu’ itself depicts the basic elements of life and shows the correlation between Astrology and Vaastu.

Upon further microlevel dissection, we notice that the each letter in the word has a meaning in itself and is related to Vaastu elements in some way or the other as below.

Vaastu – Va + Aaa + Sa + Ta + Uu

As per Kulakul Chakra in astrology:

Va – Jal ; Aaa – Vayu; Sa – Jal; Ta – Vayu; Ya – Vayu; Uu – Prithvi

We can see astounding similarities even we add ‘Purush’ word to it e.g. Pa – Vayu, Uu – Prithivi, Ra – Fire, Uu – Prithivi, Shh – Vayu.

As per Rashi Chakara:

Va – Pisces / Jal ; Aaa – Mesha / Fire; Sa – Kanya / Earthy; Ta – Makar / Earthy; Ya – Pisces / Jal; Uu – Vrishibh / Earthy; Pa – Makar / Earthy, Uu – Vrishabh / Earthy, Ru – Meen / Jal; Shh – Kanya / Earthy.

Here, we can see that there is an unbelievable link between the astrological basic elements and Vaastu principles.

Human structure is the home for the soul and body. We  live in these buildings / apartments which should be built in harmony with these elements.

It is well known that a human being is influenced by planetary positions at the time of birth as per ones Karmas in pervious births. This influence also decides at which place one is going to take birth. In this scenario the location of birthplace and time has a very important role to play. The ascendant is primarily influenced by the time and place one lives. In this article we will confine ourselves to location which has an influence on ascendant. Like human beings have an impact so is true with the place. The clutter of various planetary impacts on vaastu can be possible to improve by suitable changes in the surroundings but we can not change the planets.

These ascendant signs are correlated with main directions which is the backbone of Vaastu as below.

East – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

South – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

West – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

North – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Like above astrological rashis, the planets too have a role to play in Vaastu. All planets have their specific color significations, an important aspect in Vaastu considerations.

Sun and Mars signify red color, the color of warmth and authority. It denotes South direction. Red is best used in rooms that invoke physical activity and excitement like gyms and dancing floors.

Moon signifies aspirations and sociability. Moon signifies fourth house in our horoscopes thus orange is a highly sociable color with high aspirations. Deficiency of orange color in the living environment makes the probility of cough and cold to inhabitants. This color is good for conference rooms as orange color is a mentally stimulant color.

Jupiter signifies yellow, the color of gold. This color helps maintain thermal equilibrium of the body. This color is good for the kids who are studying. It is also considered the color of laughter.

Duly considering the space constraints, only few examples have been enumerated above which sufficiently prove that there is a correlation between vaastu and astrological elements.

There have been some attempts to link Kaalpurush with Vaastupurush with some general indicative results. The authors have been researching the concept of superimposing individual native’s natal chart on to map of the living place with profoundly accurate results.

Let us take the chart of a person with Pisces as Ascendent, which we align with East direction. If we superimpose this ascendant on the map of the house he is living in, then the Ascendent comes in south east sector as per vaastu rules. Now this south east being fiery, this always gave him an angry disposition to the man. Even his neighbours used to tell him about his angry disposition.   Most of the fights between husband and wife took place either in the drawing room or in the kitchen as both of them are located in south -east, fiery zone.

Similarly, a young person in the above house hold lives in a room in north – west direction. The direction being windy, he never wants to stay in the house, that is as soon as he is back from work he wants to go out or even on holidays he wants to go to work.

Now we can further link the impact or influence of aspects of posited planets in various houses of the natal chart. The authors have seen that there are miraculous realities being depicted and this awareness can be used for dosha remedies.

When we talk of dosha remedies Lord Ganesha comes to every one’s mind first.       Lord Ganesh’s name is synonym with every pooja in Indian homes for every occasion and dosha remedies. I don’t think there is any home in India where Lord Ganesha is not worshipped or known. If we dissect the word ‘Aum Ganeshaye Namah’. Here we notice that ‘Earthy’ element comes very many times in the letters and another point to be noticed is that there is no ‘watery’ element in the signatures.

By making an effort to understand ‘Om Ganeshaye Namah’:

Auu – Prithiv; Uu – Prithive; Ma – Aakash; Ga – Prithive; Aa – Vayu; Ne – Prithive; Sha – Aakash; Na – Prithive; Aa – Vayu; Ma – Aakash; Aa – Vayu; Ha – Aaaksh.

Perhaps this repetitive presence of earthy element in Ganesha’s signatures give it a symbol of stability in every home and prosperity in a business place.

The symbol of Lord Ganesha, the Swastika is also drawn in clockwise order, which again is the rule in Vaastu that all openings, doors, windows etc should preferably open in clockwise direction to enhance the positive energy in the house.

Simply, the use of Aum symbol on the either side of main door gives peace and prosperity to the home and if combined with Swastika and a Trishul acts like a godly protection for the persons living there as it forms a pyramid which has a property of focusing the positive energy.

It has been noticed that people living in high rise buildings are more prone to domestic unharmony and top floor is considered to be the most affected. Upon working on this concept, the authors noticed that as we move away from the earth, the probability of    inharmony in domestic environment increases. Though this is a subject of further research but our experience shows that it is true. It can be said that by ensuring the presence of an earthy element in Vaastu, we ensure its stability and longevity.

We very well know that the basics of  ‘gem therapy’ is based on colors only and we saw above the coorelation between colors, planets and Vaastu. There is an increased use  of gems in vaastu dosha remedies these days.

Above are some links between astrology and vaastu through planetary directions, nakshatras, elements, and colors so on so forth.

We continue our learnings on various concepts of astrology and vaastu in depth, which is planned to be shared in the form of a book.
